ARK: Survival Ascended — Bjarnheim, the Free Nordic Map, Is Now Available
Bjarnheim is now available for ARK: Survival Ascended. Created by renowned modder Nekatus, this free cross-platform map invites survivors into a harsh Nordic fantasy world shaped by dangerous weather, difficult early progression and a strong focus on exploration.
The map launched earlier than initially expected on August 3, 2026. Its first public version already offers a 144 km² landscape, merchant NPCs, wild Griffin nests and a map-wide weather event known as Fimbulwinter. However, Bjarnheim is still a work in progress, with roughly half of its surface and three of its nine planned artifact caves currently available.
A 144 km² Nordic fantasy world
Bjarnheim is built around a northern fantasy atmosphere rather than a traditional tropical ARK setting. Snow-covered regions, rugged coastlines, dense forests and imposing mountains form a world designed to feel mysterious and hostile from the very beginning.
The map does not provide a traditional minimap. Players are expected to learn the terrain, recognise landmarks and navigate through exploration rather than relying on an always-visible overview.
144 km² landscape
A large open world inspired by Nordic mythology and Scandinavian fantasy.
No minimap
Navigation relies on exploration, landmarks and player knowledge.
Cross-platform release
The project is listed as compatible across supported ARK: Survival Ascended platforms.
Fimbulwinter, merchant NPCs and Griffin nests
Bjarnheim introduces several systems intended to give the map its own identity.
- Fimbulwinter: a map-wide weather event capable of changing the atmosphere and survival conditions across Bjarnheim;
- merchant NPCs: non-player traders placed around the world;
- wild Griffin nests: a dedicated nesting mechanic for Griffins;
- an immersive underwater world: exploration is not limited to the surface;
- restricted cave mechanics: Cryopods do not function inside caves;
- disabled TEK Armor: the map limits certain high-level technology to preserve its intended progression.
The creator has also adjusted creature levels so that higher-level animals appear more frequently than on many standard maps. This should make successful taming more rewarding, but it also increases the danger faced by new survivors.
A deliberately difficult early game
Bjarnheim is not designed as a relaxed beginner map. Nekatus describes its early game as very hard and punishing, with a more rewarding endgame for players who manage to survive long enough to reach it.
The absence of a minimap, stronger creature distribution and environmental threats all reinforce that philosophy. A new tribe may need to spend more time scouting for a defensible starting area, securing food and preparing for sudden weather changes.
Bjarnheim is designed for experienced survivors. Server owners may want to adjust gathering, taming or experience rates if their community prefers a more accessible introduction to the map.
The map is available, but it is not finished
The current release represents the first playable version of Bjarnheim rather than the final map.
Surface completion
Approximately 50% of the planned surface is currently available.
Artifact caves
Three of the nine planned artifact caves are accessible.
More content planned
Future updates should add new caves, DLC content and additional open-world areas.
The creator has also mentioned the possible addition of Genesis Part 1 ocean physics at a later stage. By contrast, Titanosaurus, Giganotosaurus and Carcharodontosaurus spawns are not currently planned, nor are outposts and NPC ships.
How to launch a Bjarnheim dedicated server
Bjarnheim already includes a dedicated Windows server package. Administrators need the map name and its CurseForge mod identifier when configuring their ARK: Survival Ascended server.
Mod ID: 1376189
The exact method used to add a map or mod depends on the hosting panel. In most cases, the administrator must install or activate the mod, select Bjarnheim_WP as the map and restart the server so that all required files can be downloaded.
Before opening the server to players, administrators should also verify that the map loads correctly, that the installed version matches the current release and that enough storage is available for the client and server files.

Current version: 1.0

Several ARK expansions must be installed
The Bjarnheim description states that the map uses assets from several official ARK expansions. Players are therefore instructed to have the following content installed:
- Ragnarok;
- Valguero;
- Scorched Earth;
- Extinction;
- Aberration;
- Lost Colony;
- Genesis Part 1.
Technical note: CurseForge currently lists no formal project dependencies, but the creator explicitly states that these expansions must be installed because Bjarnheim uses assets from them. Server administrators should follow the creator’s instructions rather than relying only on the automated dependency list.
A promising new home for ARK communities
Bjarnheim already has a strong identity despite being only partially complete. Its Nordic atmosphere, difficult progression and unique mechanics make it particularly suitable for communities looking for a fresh start away from the official maps.
The current version should still be approached as an evolving project. New regions, caves and gameplay changes may arrive over time, and server owners should expect to update the map regularly as development continues.
For players prepared to face a harsher opening and explore without a minimap, Bjarnheim offers one of the most ambitious free community maps currently available for ARK: Survival Ascended.
