Hytale Adds Five Hardcore Settings for Servers: Permadeath, Shared Lives and Soulbound

Hytale is turning Hardcore into a much more flexible multiplayer system. Update 6 Part 11, released to the Pre-Release branch on August 6, 2026, introduces five world-creation settings ranging from traditional permadeath to shared team lives and a particularly unforgiving Soulbound mode.

The update is especially interesting for server administrators. Hardcore is now represented directly in server configuration, player lives can be accessed by plugins, administrators receive commands for managing those lives, and Hypixel Studios continues to expand the tools available for running persistent community worlds.

Important: these features are currently available on the Hytale Pre-Release branch. They have not yet been deployed to the stable branch. Players can enable Pre-Release builds from the Hytale Launcher under Settings → Pre-Release.

Five Ways to Configure Hardcore

Hardcore originally appeared earlier in the Update 6 testing cycle as a straightforward single-life system. Part 11 expands the feature considerably by offering five selectable settings when creating a new world.

SETTINGLIFE SYSTEMMULTIPLAYER CONSEQUENCE
OffHardcore is disabled. The world uses its normal death rules.
PermadeathEach player receives one life.A player's death is permanent for that run.
Three StrikesEach player starts with three lives by default.Players are eliminated individually after using their available lives.
Nine LivesThe entire world shares a pool of nine lives by default.Every death consumes the same team pool. When it is exhausted, the run ends for everyone.
SoulboundThe whole group's fate is linked. If a single player dies, the entire run ends.

When creating a world using Three Strikes or Nine Lives, administrators can also change the initial number of available lives. The value can be increased or decreased from the default, although it cannot be set to zero. When Hardcore is active, the remaining life count is displayed above the player's health.

Shared Lives Could Completely Change Cooperative Servers

Permadeath is nothing new in survival games, but Nine Lives and Soulbound are particularly interesting in a persistent multiplayer environment because the consequences of one player's decisions can affect everybody else.

Nine Lives creates a shared resource that the group has to protect. A cautious player can effectively lose one of their lives because another member of the community repeatedly takes unnecessary risks. That immediately gives server administrators the foundation for cooperative challenges, seasonal runs or small-group survival events.

Soulbound goes even further. A single death ends the run for everyone, turning exploration and combat into genuinely collective decisions. For organised groups, content creators or competitive communities, it could become one of Hytale's most entertaining challenge formats.

Hardcore Is Now a Real Server Configuration Feature

The most important change for dedicated server owners is that Hardcore is no longer only a player-facing world option. Hytale now exposes it through the server configuration.

can now use the values , or . Existing Hardcore worlds are automatically migrated to the configuration.

Administrator note: these low-level server configuration values are distinct from the five names displayed during world creation. The important change is that Hardcore state can now be represented and managed directly by the server rather than remaining only a world-creation toggle.

A new component also exposes the remaining lives of a player so that game modes and server plugins can read or modify them. This is potentially much more important than the five presets themselves because community developers can build their own systems around the same life mechanic.

New commands are included in the WorldEditor permission group, while the command has been moved to the Builder permission group. Reviving another player also receives its own permission node.

On the networking side, Hytale now transmits remaining Hardcore lives through the protocol, allowing the client and server to keep this information synchronized. In practical terms, Hypixel Studios is treating Hardcore as part of the underlying multiplayer architecture rather than as a simple gameplay modifier.

Dedicated Servers Can Also Recover More Cleanly After a World Crash

Hardcore is the headline addition of Part 11, but it arrives during a broader series of improvements to Hytale's dedicated server architecture.

Update 6 Part 10, released on July 30, introduced automatic recovery when the main world of a dedicated server crashes. Previously, such a crash could leave the server impossible to join until an administrator manually reloaded the world or restarted the server process.

Administrators can now add a block either to the global server configuration or to the configuration of an individual world. Three modes are available:

The policy can additionally define , and a fallback action when recovery attempts are exhausted. For persistent public worlds, this reduces the risk of a single world-thread failure leaving the entire community offline until an administrator notices the problem.

More Runtime Controls for World Generation and View Distance

Earlier Pre-Release builds of Update 6 have also progressively expanded the server console, giving administrators more control without requiring a complete restart for every adjustment.

The command can override the number of worker threads used by WorldGen V2 while the server is running. The override lasts until the next restart, while a value of restores the server default.

A separate console command controls the server-wide maximum view radius. Administrators can set a value from 1 to 512 chunks, query the current value or reset it to the default cap of 32 chunks.

Java update: Part 11 also updates the Java runtime bundled with the Hytale Launcher to Temurin JRE 26.0.2+10. Hypixel Studios recommends that dedicated server operators using Shenandoah GC update to this runtime as well.

Hytale's Server Architecture Is Becoming More Interesting With Every Update

The five Hardcore settings are easy to understand from a player's perspective, but the more significant story is what is happening underneath them. Hytale now has server-side Hardcore configuration, reusable life components for plugins, granular permissions, spectator systems, crash-recovery policies and increasingly detailed runtime controls.

That combination creates interesting possibilities for community servers. An administrator could run a seasonal Permadeath world, organise a cooperative challenge around a shared pool of lives, or eventually use plugins to create completely custom rules built on top of .

Hytale remains in Early Access and the current features are still being tested on the Pre-Release branch, so server operators should avoid treating these interfaces as completely final. Even so, Update 6 shows that Hypixel Studios is continuing to invest heavily in the tools needed for long-running community and dedicated servers.
