Space Engineers 2 improves performance and confirms dedicated servers are coming

Space Engineers 2 has received a major new update focused on performance, stability, saves and quality-of-life improvements. More importantly for multiplayer communities, Keen Software House has confirmed that dedicated servers are planned for a later stage of development.

Released on August 17, 2026, the Smoother, Stable & Faster update does not introduce another huge gameplay system. Instead, Keen is strengthening the technical foundations of its Early Access sandbox with better GPU performance, more consistent frame pacing, improved save management and extensive stability work.

Better performance with large grids and destruction

Performance is one of the main targets of the update. Keen Software House says GPU performance has been improved to reduce sudden performance fluctuations, while frame pacing should now be more consistent.

Menus and the general user interface should also feel smoother, while several particularly demanding situations have been optimized.

Large Grids

Performance has been improved when working with increasingly complex player-built structures.

Blueprints

Blueprint previews, pasting blueprints and deleting grids should now put less pressure on the game.

Destruction

Large-scale destruction has also been optimized, an important improvement for Space Engineers' physics-heavy sandbox.

Long play sessions should maintain their performance more reliably as well. These improvements matter for Space Engineers 2 because increasingly ambitious ships, stations and mechanical creations can place significant pressure on the engine.

The save system has been significantly improved

Keen has redesigned the Save Game Screen and separated autosaves from manually created saves. The goal is to make existing versions of a world easier to understand and reduce the risk of accidentally losing an important save.

Each world can now retain up to five autosaves and five manual saves. Autosaves no longer overwrite the player's regular manual saves.

Extra safety: Space Engineers 2 now automatically creates a save when the player enters a cockpit, providing another recovery point before taking control of a ship or vehicle.

Flying and the early game should be easier to understand

The flight interface has also been revised. The new Flight HUD provides clearer information while piloting ships, while Keen has introduced a Safe Speed Limiter designed to make spacecraft easier to control.

Early contracts, tutorials and player guidance have also been adjusted to make the first steps into the Almagest System easier to understand. Keen is therefore working on both sides of the experience: making the game easier to approach for new players while improving the experience for players building much more complex creations.

Stability receives major attention

Keen describes stability work as one of the biggest parts of this release. Numerous underlying systems have been modified to reduce crashes and other stability issues.

The studio has also improved its internal detection and reporting systems, which should help developers identify future problems more quickly. That remains particularly important because Space Engineers 2 is still an Early Access Alpha and continues to gain increasingly complex gameplay systems.

Multiplayer is coming in several stages

For multiplayer communities, however, the biggest feature is still ahead. Space Engineers 2 remains a single-player experience for now.

Keen's current roadmap separates multiplayer development into several stages. The first implementation is expected to introduce four-player cooperative Survival, with one player hosting the session.

A broader multiplayer implementation is planned later. This progressive approach gives Keen time to validate shared worlds, progression, contracts, reconnection and other multiplayer systems before expanding the architecture further.

Dedicated servers are officially planned

This is the particularly interesting part for server communities: Keen Software House has confirmed that dedicated servers are planned for Space Engineers 2.

They will not arrive with the first four-player cooperative implementation, which is currently designed around player hosting. Dedicated server support is expected later as Keen expands the multiplayer architecture.

Dedicated server status: dedicated servers are part of Keen Software House's multiplayer plans, but there is currently no firm release date for their availability.

Keen has previously discussed public and dedicated servers operating as more traditional sandbox environments rather than relying on the scripted campaign structure of the main experience.

For established Space Engineers communities, that is an important confirmation. Server hosting is not merely a possibility for the sequel: it is part of Keen's long-term vision for multiplayer.

Space Engineers 2 is building its multiplayer foundations

The Smoother, Stable & Faster update does not deliver multiplayer itself, but it improves many of the technical systems that will become increasingly important as Space Engineers 2 grows.

More consistent performance, better handling of large grids, optimized destruction, improved saves and greater stability all contribute to a stronger foundation. For server communities, the key takeaway is equally clear: dedicated servers are coming, even if Keen is not ready to give them a firm release date yet.
