grounded 2 update

Grounded 2: Into the Abyss Brings a Massive New Area and the PS5 Version on August 11

August 11, 2026 will mark one of the biggest milestones yet for Grounded 2. Obsidian Entertainment is launching the survival game's PlayStation 5 version alongside Into the Abyss, a major content update that finally opens the pond of Brookhollow Park and dramatically expands the areas available to explore.

Rather than simply adding another small biome, Into the Abyss introduces new environments above and below the water, additional progression paths, returning creatures, underwater equipment and a completely new amphibious Buggy. At the same time, the PS5 release will bring another major group of players into Grounded 2 while the game continues its Early Access and Game Preview development.

Into the Abyss finally opens the pond

The pond has been one of the most obvious unexplored areas of Brookhollow Park, and Into the Abyss will finally turn it into a fully playable part of Grounded 2.

Obsidian describes the update as one of the game's biggest additions so far. Players will not simply dive beneath the surface: the expansion introduces new locations around the pond itself, new progression routes and new threats spread across both terrestrial and underwater environments.

The result should make this part of Brookhollow Park feel like an entirely new chapter rather than a side activity. Exploration will extend from the shoreline to the deepest sections of the pond, with progression gradually opening areas that cannot immediately be reached when players first arrive.

A major new area

The pond becomes a complete explorable region rather than scenery surrounding the existing park.

Surface and underwater gameplay

Players will explore environments both around the pond and beneath its surface.

New progression paths

Equipment and discoveries will gradually allow access to previously unreachable locations.

Mountains, Bayou and the depths beneath the surface

Several distinct environments will make up the new region. Obsidian has specifically named the Mountains, the Bayou and the deeper underwater sections of the pond.

This variety is important for Grounded 2 because Brookhollow Park is designed around the idea that ordinary human spaces become enormous ecosystems when viewed from the perspective of a character only a few millimetres tall. A body of water that would normally be crossed in seconds can therefore become an entire survival zone.

The Bayou should provide a very different atmosphere from the existing sections of the park, while the Mountains introduce more vertical terrain around the pond. Below them lies another layer entirely, with the underwater environment becoming a major part of exploration and progression.

Diving becomes a real progression system

Into the Abyss also brings dedicated diving equipment. As players progress through the new content, they will gain access to diving suits that allow them to remain underwater for longer periods.

This means underwater exploration will not simply be a case of swimming directly to every point of interest. Some areas will initially remain inaccessible, encouraging players to gather resources, improve their equipment and return later with the tools required to explore deeper sections.

Several familiar creatures from the original Grounded are also returning. Obsidian has already confirmed the presence of the koi fish and the diving bell spider, alongside other surprises that the studio has deliberately kept secret before launch.

Watch the water: anyone who remembers the pond from the original Grounded already knows that underwater exploration is not necessarily safer than travelling across the surface. Into the Abyss is bringing back some familiar aquatic threats while introducing new dangers of its own.

The Toe-biter is Grounded 2's first amphibious Buggy

One of the update's most interesting additions is the Toe-biter, a new Buggy designed specifically for the pond environment.

Unlike existing mounts that are primarily adapted to terrestrial exploration, the Toe-biter is amphibious. It can travel across land and water, giving players another way to move between the shoreline and aquatic sections of the new region.

Grounded 2 has made Buggies an important part of its identity since launch, turning insects into mounts that can assist with exploration, transport and combat. The Toe-biter expands that concept by adapting the system to an environment where traditional land-based movement would otherwise become much more restrictive.

Land

The Toe-biter can be used to travel around the shoreline and other terrestrial areas.

Water

Its amphibious design allows players to continue travelling when terrain gives way to the pond.

Exploration

The new Buggy creates another way to search the expanded region and escape its creatures.

Grounded 2 also arrives on PlayStation 5 on August 11

Into the Abyss is only half of the story. On the same day, Grounded 2 will launch on PlayStation 5, almost a year after its initial Early Access and Game Preview release on Xbox Series X|S and PC.

The PlayStation Store lists support for up to four online players, with PlayStation Plus required for online multiplayer. The PS5 version also supports DualSense vibration and trigger effects and is listed as enhanced for PS5 Pro.

For the wider Grounded 2 community, the important part is simply the arrival of another large console audience. Obsidian itself describes the PS5 release as bringing an entirely new community of players into Brookhollow Park.

Launching the PlayStation version together with one of Grounded 2's largest content updates also gives newcomers considerably more to discover than players had when the game first entered Early Access in July 2025.

The PS5 launch does not mean Grounded 2 is finished

Despite the scale of Into the Abyss and the arrival of another platform, Grounded 2 is still an Early Access / Game Preview title.

Obsidian continues to expand Brookhollow Park through major updates while refining performance, progression, multiplayer systems and other parts of the game based on community feedback.

Into the Abyss is not Grounded 2 version 1.0. August 11 is a major development milestone, but Brookhollow Park is still being expanded and additional updates are expected as Early Access continues.

This distinction is particularly important for players returning after several months away. Grounded 2 is growing significantly, but its world and systems should still be expected to evolve before the final release.

A major multiplayer update, but not a dedicated server launch

Grounded 2 remains heavily focused on cooperative play. Official documentation describes online multiplayer and co-op, while the game also uses Shared Worlds to support persistent group progression.

However, this should not be confused with a traditional dedicated server system such as those available for games like Minecraft, Rust or ARK.

Dedicated server status: at the time of writing, Obsidian's public Grounded 2 documentation does not announce a standalone dedicated server package. The game currently relies on its own multiplayer and Shared World systems instead.

That means Into the Abyss is particularly relevant to groups already exploring Brookhollow Park together, but August 11 should not be interpreted as the launch of dedicated server hosting for Grounded 2.

Grounded 2 is about to become considerably larger

Into the Abyss looks like the kind of update that can substantially change the scale of an Early Access survival game. The pond alone introduces a large new environment, but Obsidian is also using it to expand progression, underwater exploration and the Buggy system at the same time.

The timing makes the update even more significant. Existing Xbox and PC players receive one of the biggest new regions added to Grounded 2 so far, while PlayStation 5 players enter Brookhollow Park for the first time on the very same day.

For a survival game built around cooperative exploration, that combination of new territory, new progression systems and a new platform makes August 11 one of the most important dates in Grounded 2's development since its original Early Access launch.
