Project Zomboid 42.20.3: Servers Now Support Up to 254 Players
Project Zomboid Build 42 continues to improve its multiplayer foundations. Released on August 17, 2026, the stable 42.20.3 hotfix brings several changes aimed directly at dedicated servers, including better player-limit handling, administrator access to full servers and fixes for memory leaks that could eventually hurt performance or cause crashes.
The headline number is 254 players: Project Zomboid can now handle server player limits up to that value. However, administrators should not interpret this as a recommendation to immediately run a 254-player world. Actual capacity will still depend on server resources, mods, world activity and the workload generated by the community.
Project Zomboid Servers Can Now Support Player Limits Up to 254
The most visible multiplayer change in 42.20.3 is improved handling of server player limits. The Indie Stone now lists support for configurations reaching up to 254 players.
That is particularly interesting for large public communities, role-play servers and persistent worlds that want room to grow. It removes an important software-side limitation, but the number should be understood correctly.
254 players does not mean 254 players are recommended for every server. The patch increases the supported player-limit range. Real-world capacity still depends on CPU performance, available memory, mods, zombie populations, player distribution and the amount of activity taking place across the world.
For most private communities, the practical benefit is therefore not necessarily having hundreds of simultaneous survivors. It is that the multiplayer architecture is becoming more flexible and better prepared for larger servers.
Administrators Can Join Even When the Server Is Full
The player-limit change comes with another useful quality-of-life improvement: administrators can now access a server when it has reached its normal player capacity.
This is much more important than it may initially sound. On a busy public server, an administrator may need to connect precisely when the world is full: to investigate a player report, moderate an incident, diagnose lag or deal with an in-game problem.
Previously, reaching the configured player limit could make that unnecessarily difficult. Version 42.20.3 improves the way Project Zomboid handles this situation so that server management does not depend on waiting for a regular player to disconnect.
The Endless “Loading Map” Problem Has Been Fixed
The hotfix also targets one of the more frustrating multiplayer connection problems. The Indie Stone says it has fixed an issue that could leave a client permanently stuck on “Loading Map”.
For server operators, connection fixes like this are particularly valuable because they reduce situations where the server appears healthy while individual players remain unable to finish joining the world.
Memory Leaks Were Causing Performance to Degrade Over Time
The other major part of 42.20.3 concerns memory management. The developers say they have addressed multiple causes of memory leaks that could progressively degrade performance and eventually lead to crashes.
This type of problem is especially relevant to persistent dedicated servers. A memory leak may not be immediately visible after startup. Instead, memory consumption increases over time until the server slows down or eventually runs out of available resources.
Memory leaks
Several identified sources of progressively increasing memory usage have been addressed.
Memory optimisations
The hotfix includes additional optimisations intended to reduce unnecessary memory usage.
Lighting fixes
Errors occurring during lighting updates have also been corrected.
The patch additionally reduces some instances of black or grey areas appearing when travelling rapidly through the world. The Indie Stone notes that other causes of this rendering issue are still under investigation.
Caution: Some Dedicated Servers Are Reporting Problems After 42.20.3
Despite the multiplayer fixes, the first hours following the release of 42.20.3 have produced several reports of new connection or startup problems on The Indie Stone's official forums.
Some administrators report dedicated servers that no longer start correctly after updating. Other players describe becoming stuck on “Joining Game”, while another report shows a timeout while waiting for the server to send player data.
Important : these are currently community reports, not confirmation of a widespread 42.20.3 server bug affecting every installation. Different configurations, mods and version mismatches can produce similar symptoms.
Members of The Indie Stone team have asked affected users to check that both the client and server have been updated and to provide logs when reporting problems. The QA team is also directing technical issues to the official support forum and bug-report system.
What Should VeryGames Project Zomboid Server Administrators Do?
For most VeryGames communities, there is no special migration procedure attached to 42.20.3. The Indie Stone specifically says that the update should not break existing saves.
VeryGames installs the latest Project Zomboid server version automatically by default, while administrators can also retain control over how and when server versions are deployed through the management panel.
Recommended after updating to 42.20.3
- Make sure the server and all connecting clients are running compatible versions.
- Keep a recent backup of the world before making major server or mod changes.
- Restart the server cleanly after the update.
- Check that your Workshop mods are compatible with the current Build 42 version.
- If players remain stuck while joining, test the server without mods where practical.
- Keep server and client logs if the problem persists, as they may be required for troubleshooting.
There is therefore no reason to wipe a healthy world simply because 42.20.3 has been released. If a problem appears immediately after updating, troubleshooting the version, mods and logs is preferable to deleting an existing save.
The Indie Stone Wants More Direct Feedback From Game Server Providers
The focus on hosting infrastructure is not limited to this hotfix. During the development of Build 42 Stable, The Indie Stone announced a new initiative aimed specifically at medium and large Game Server Providers.
Providers managing large numbers of Project Zomboid servers have been invited to participate in a dedicated communication channel where hosting feedback and technical issues can be discussed directly with the developers.
Combined with the new player-limit handling, memory optimisations and continued multiplayer work planned throughout Build 42's support cycle, this suggests that dedicated server performance will remain an important development priority rather than being treated as a finished feature.
A Significant Server Update, Even If 254 Players Is Not the Whole Story
Version 42.20.3 may be labelled as a hotfix, but its multiplayer changes are meaningful for Project Zomboid communities. Raising the supported server limit, allowing administrators to connect to full servers and addressing long-term memory problems are all improvements that matter far beyond a small private session.
The early connection and startup reports are worth monitoring, but there is currently no evidence that every dedicated server is affected. For administrators whose servers update normally, the hotfix should primarily represent another step toward a more mature Build 42 multiplayer environment.
