ARK: Survival Ascended Moves to Unreal Engine 5.8 on September 30
September 30, 2026 is shaping up to be one of the biggest technical dates yet for ARK: Survival Ascended. Studio Wildcard has confirmed that the game will move to Unreal Engine 5.8 in a major update that will also introduce the Therizinosaurus TLC and two new creatures, Cerberax and Gargantar.
The announcement was made in Community Crunch 520. While the new creatures will naturally attract plenty of attention, the Unreal Engine upgrade could ultimately prove more important for players and dedicated server communities.
Unreal Engine 5.8 is the real headline
Studio Wildcard describes the move to Unreal Engine 5.8 as one of the biggest technical milestones yet for ARK: Survival Ascended.
The development team says the upgrade is being built around tangible performance improvements, platform-specific fixes and a stronger technical foundation for future updates.
Performance
Wildcard says the engine upgrade is being developed with tangible performance improvements in mind.
Platform fixes
The update will include fixes specifically targeting the different platforms supported by ASA.
Future development
UE 5.8 will provide a new technical foundation for the content and improvements still planned for the game.
Wildcard has not yet published detailed benchmarks or a complete technical changelog, so it is too early to put exact numbers on the expected improvement. The important point for now is that September 30 will not simply be another content patch. The underlying technology powering ASA is changing again.
What could Unreal Engine 5.8 mean for dedicated servers?
For dedicated server administrators, a major engine migration deserves more attention than a conventional ARK patch.
At the moment, Studio Wildcard has not announced new hardware requirements, configuration changes or special migration procedures for dedicated servers. There is therefore no server-side action required today specifically because of UE 5.8.
However, server owners should expect September 30 to be an important maintenance date. The server build will need to remain compatible with updated game clients, and communities using a large number of mods should pay particularly close attention to compatibility announcements around launch.
For server administrators: there is nothing to migrate manually yet. Wildcard has not published a dedicated-server procedure for UE 5.8. The sensible approach is to wait for the final patch notes while preparing backups and checking mod compatibility before updating a live community server.
The performance improvements announced by Wildcard are encouraging, but they should not automatically be interpreted as guaranteed dedicated-server performance gains. Some engine optimisations may primarily affect rendering or clients, while others can reduce CPU workloads that also matter in multiplayer. We will need the final technical notes to know exactly where the benefits lie.
Mods are the biggest compatibility question
ARK: Survival Ascended has a particularly active modding ecosystem, which makes compatibility one of the most important questions surrounding any major engine upgrade.
There is currently no announcement saying that UE 5.8 will require all ASA mods to be rebuilt or recooked. Server administrators should therefore avoid assuming that their mod list will break on September 30.
However, there is precedent for caution. During the previous major transition to Unreal Engine 5.5, Wildcard explained that changes to Unreal's material system meant existing cooked shaders could not simply be reused. Overwolf automatically recooked ASA mods for that release, while Wildcard worked on compatibility problems affecting premium and popular free mods.
Wildcard also said at the time that it hoped future engine upgrades could avoid such a complete recooking process. Whether UE 5.8 achieves that goal has not yet been confirmed.
Running a heavily modded ARK server?
The safest strategy will be to monitor updates from the authors of your most important mods during the days surrounding September 30. Mods affecting maps, structures, creatures or major gameplay systems deserve particular attention before reopening a persistent world after the update.
The Therizinosaurus is getting a major TLC
The technical upgrade will arrive alongside a substantial refresh for one of ARK's most recognisable creatures.
The Therizinosaurus TLC was selected through the Extra Life community vote. Wildcard says the update is intended to give the creature more personality without changing its fundamental role as one of ARK's strongest harvesting dinosaurs.
Wild Therizinos will become more expressive before attacking, giving nearby survivors a clearer warning. Tamed creatures will also gain visual differences linked to their harvesting specialisation, with their claws and posture reflecting the work they perform.
The updated Therizinosaurus is also expected to become more agile when ridden, including improved turning and the ability to negotiate obstacles more effectively.
Cerberax and Gargantar arrive on the same day
September 30 will also expand ASA's creature roster with Cerberax and Gargantar.
Cerberax will be the second creature included in ARK Fantastic Tames Season 1, following Burrowbuck. This three-headed beast can carry a survivor into combat, but Wildcard is teasing additional mechanics that become more interesting when several tribemates work together.
Gargantar, meanwhile, is the latest dragon connected to ARK Dragontopia. Owners of the ARK Dragontopia Expansion Pass will receive early access to the creature when the September update launches.

How should ARK server owners prepare for September 30?
With more than a month remaining before the update, there is no reason to make major changes to an existing ARK: Survival Ascended server today.
Closer to release, administrators should make sure they have a recent backup of their persistent world and configuration, keep a record of their installed mods, check compatibility information from mod developers and allow for a maintenance period when the new server build becomes available.
It may also be worth avoiding major mod-list changes immediately before the engine upgrade. Keeping the server environment stable will make it easier to identify whether a problem after September 30 comes from the game update itself or from a specific mod.
No immediate action is required. September 30 is the date to watch. Once Studio Wildcard publishes the full UE 5.8 patch notes and server build information, administrators will be able to determine whether additional migration steps are necessary.
Before September 30, Astraeos gets one final update
There is another ARK date to remember before the engine migration. The final Astraeos update arrives on August 26, introducing Boaratos among its additions.
That means the coming weeks will remain unusually busy for ARK: Survival Ascended. But from a technical and server-hosting perspective, September 30 is clearly the date with the greatest potential impact.
If Unreal Engine 5.8 delivers the improvements Wildcard is targeting without creating major compatibility problems for mods and persistent servers, it could become one of ASA's most important updates since the move to Unreal Engine 5.5.
