DayZ Badlands Motorbikes: “Many Bikes” Servers Will Test Multiplayer Physics in Update 1.30

Motorbikes are coming to DayZ with Badlands, but Bohemia Interactive does not intend to wait for the expansion's full release to see how they behave in multiplayer. Experimental Update 1.30 will introduce special “Many Bikes” servers designed to put significantly more motorcycles into players' hands before the feature reaches the stable game.

The experiment should provide particularly useful feedback on the new two-wheel physics, vehicle networking and the partial return of ragdoll behaviour. Motorbikes will also not remain exclusive to Nasdara: Bohemia says they will eventually appear across DayZ's existing terrains as well, although in smaller numbers.

For server communities: the upcoming Experimental 1.30 period will provide the first opportunity to see how DayZ's new motorcycles behave when many of them are active in a real multiplayer environment. Bohemia has not yet announced when this experimental branch will begin.

“Many Bikes” servers will put the new vehicle system to the test

Motorcycles were not originally part of the Badlands plan. They became a natural addition as development of Nasdara progressed, partly because the new terrain is the largest map Bohemia Interactive has built for DayZ.

Rather than limiting the feature to the expansion, the studio now intends to deploy bikes across the other DayZ terrains as well. Bohemia wants to observe how players use them on different maps, which is where the Experimental Update 1.30 test becomes particularly interesting.

Special servers labelled “Many Bikes” will increase access to the new vehicles during the experimental period. This should allow the developers to collect substantially more real-world multiplayer data than they would with normal vehicle spawn rates.

There is also an important technical connection with earlier DayZ updates. Bohemia says the vehicle networking improvements introduced with Update 1.28 provided essential groundwork for the new motorcycles.

Ragdoll physics return — with synchronized crash positions

Motorcycle crashes also bring back a feature that long-time DayZ players may remember: ragdoll physics.

When a player crashes at sufficiently high speed, other survivors can see the rider being thrown from the motorcycle using a ragdoll simulation. From the crashed player's own perspective, the character will instead briefly lose consciousness.

The multiplayer implementation is the interesting part. Bohemia says all clients should see the ejected character in the same position. That synchronization matters in a game where the exact location of an unconscious player can immediately affect looting, combat or rescue attempts after an accident.

Jana and Enduro offer two very different ways to travel

Two motorcycles are currently planned. The first is the Jana, a small moped inspired by the Czechoslovakian Jawa 50/05. It is expected to reach approximately 70 km/h, providing a compact alternative for travelling longer distances without the size and complexity of a car.

The second is the much faster Enduro, inspired by the Jawa 500 682 Bitrak. Its target maximum speed is around 130 km/h, with long-travel suspension and off-road tyres designed for rough terrain.

Jana

A lightweight moped inspired by the Jawa 50/05, with a maximum speed of approximately 70 km/h.

Enduro

A much faster off-road motorcycle inspired by the Jawa 500 682 Bitrak, capable of around 130 km/h.

Both motorcycles are designed purely as transportation. They have no cargo inventory and no passenger seat, making them faster and more compact than cars without replacing their ability to move equipment or several survivors at once.

Motorbikes will need maintenance just like other DayZ vehicles

Bohemia is also giving motorcycles their own maintenance rules. They can be repaired with a blowtorch and their tyres can be replaced. Unlike cars, neither bike requires a separate battery, making it somewhat easier to assemble a working vehicle.

The spark plug remains important, however, and aggressive riding can damage it. Players will also be able to physically push a motorcycle while its engine is switched off or while it is in neutral — useful when repositioning a bike or dealing with a mechanical problem.

The simulation itself includes motorcycle-specific leaning, steering animations and suspension behaviour. The front light also follows the direction of the handlebars rather than simply pointing straight ahead.

What server administrators should watch during Experimental 1.30

Once Experimental 1.30 becomes available, community administrators and experienced players should have several areas worth watching closely.

  • How motorcycles behave when several vehicles and players are active in the same area;
  • whether crashes and ejected player positions remain properly synchronized between clients;
  • how the two-wheel physics react to high latency or unstable connections;
  • how quickly bikes become damaged during normal and aggressive use;
  • how motorcycle availability changes player movement, encounters and map progression;
  • how the feature behaves across different DayZ terrains rather than only on Nasdara.

The “Many Bikes” setup is particularly useful because problems involving physics and networking do not always appear during controlled internal testing. Putting a much larger number of vehicles into the hands of real players should provide Bohemia with valuable feedback before Update 1.30 reaches the stable branch.

No Experimental 1.30 date yet: Bohemia Interactive says the release date for the experimental branch will be announced later. Until then, the motorcycles and their associated systems remain work in progress and may still change before release.

A major change for DayZ multiplayer mobility

Motorcycles could significantly change how survivors move through DayZ. They are faster and more agile than travelling on foot while remaining much lighter and less versatile than a car, creating a new compromise between speed, visibility, cargo capacity and risk.

For multiplayer communities, however, the most interesting stage may arrive before Badlands itself. Experimental Update 1.30 and its “Many Bikes” servers will give players and Bohemia an opportunity to see how the new physics, networking and crash synchronization behave once dozens of survivors start pushing the system beyond carefully controlled development environments.
