ARK Official Servers on Nintendo Switch Will Shut Down on August 31, 2026

Studio Wildcard has announced the end of the official Nintendo Switch server network for ARK: Survival Evolved and ARK: Ultimate Survivor Edition. The servers will close on August 31, 2026, ending an online chapter that began with the original Switch release in 2018.

The announcement concerns the official servers operated for the Nintendo Switch versions of ARK. It does not mean that the games themselves are being removed, nor that every multiplayer option will disappear. Single-player mode and unofficial servers are expected to remain fully playable after the shutdown.

What exactly is shutting down?

On August 31, 2026, players will no longer be able to connect to the official Nintendo Switch servers for:

• ARK: Survival Evolved on Nintendo Switch;
• ARK: Ultimate Survivor Edition on Nintendo Switch.

Characters, tribes, constructions and tamed creatures stored on those official worlds will therefore no longer be accessible through the official network once the shutdown takes effect.

The announcement also does not explain whether final official server saves will be distributed to players. Until Studio Wildcard provides additional instructions, survivors should not assume that their official world can automatically be recovered or transferred elsewhere.

A network explored by more than one million players

According to Studio Wildcard, more than one million players have explored ARK's official Nintendo Switch servers since the platform's original release in 2018.

The Switch version later received a major technical overhaul. In 2022, Grove Street Games launched a rebuilt version as part of ARK: Ultimate Survivor Edition, improving the experience and progressively bringing the console closer to the content available on other platforms.

Studio Wildcard thanked the players who took part in this long-running portable version of the ARK experience. For established tribes, however, the closure also creates an urgent question: what will still be possible after August 31?

What will remain playable after the shutdown?

The end of the official network is not the end of ARK on Nintendo Switch. Studio Wildcard has explicitly confirmed that two major ways of playing will remain available.

This distinction is important. Official servers are managed by Studio Wildcard, while unofficial servers are operated independently and can use their own rules, rates, passwords and community structure.

Players who only use single-player mode should therefore see little direct impact. The biggest change concerns tribes currently based on official PvE or PvP worlds.

An unofficial PC server is not automatically compatible with Nintendo Switch

Players considering a move to an unofficial server must check the supported platform before renting or joining one. The Nintendo Switch version of ARK does not simply connect to every standard PC server.

The platform also does not offer general crossplay with PC, PlayStation or Xbox servers. A community planning to continue on Switch should therefore verify that the chosen unofficial server is specifically listed as Nintendo Switch compatible.

This also means that moving to an unofficial environment may require starting a new adventure unless Studio Wildcard or the relevant hosting platform announces a supported migration process for official server data.

What should Switch players do before August 31?

Studio Wildcard has not yet published a detailed migration guide in the shutdown announcement. Even so, tribes can begin preparing now.

1. Identify the official server used by the tribe and make sure every member knows about the shutdown.
2. Record important information, including tribe names, survivor levels, base locations and creature lines.
3. Capture screenshots or videos of bases, tames and memorable moments before the server disappears.
4. Watch for further official announcements concerning final saves, exports or migration options.
5. Test an unofficial Switch server early rather than waiting until the official network has already closed.
6. Check platform compatibility before purchasing any hosting service.

The beginning of a new chapter for Switch communities

The closure marks the end of the last official ARK: Survival Evolved server network on Nintendo Switch, but it does not erase the game's multiplayer community.

Unofficial servers can offer advantages that official worlds do not always provide: active moderation, adjusted harvesting and taming rates, protected community spaces, password access and rules designed around a specific group of players.

For long-established tribes, the transition will still be difficult. Years of bases, creatures and shared stories may be tied to worlds that are about to disappear. The coming weeks should therefore be used to preserve those memories and decide whether the group wants to restart together on an unofficial Nintendo Switch server.

The essential date is August 31, 2026. After that day, official ARK and Ultimate Survivor Edition servers on Nintendo Switch will no longer be accessible, while single-player and compatible unofficial servers will continue to operate.
