Windrose Ashlands Arrives This Winter With Major Ship Customization Changes

Windrose is preparing its first major content update for this winter. Developer Kraken Express and publisher Pocketpair Publishing have confirmed the release window for Ashlands, alongside a substantial overhaul of ship customization. The aim is to give pirate crews much greater control over their vessels, both above and below deck.

The announcement accompanied a new trailer at the October Triple-i Initiative showcase. Pocketpair confirmed the winter launch window on October 9, while Kraken Express detailed the changes in its Voyage to Ashlands development blog. No exact release date has been announced, and these features are still in development.

When will the Windrose Ashlands update be released?

Ashlands is currently scheduled for winter, with no specific day or month confirmed. The reveal sets a clearer target for players who have been waiting for Windrose’s next major chapter since its Early Access launch, but it is not a final release date.

The studio describes Ashlands as a major content update, not as an update already available to download. More development previews are expected before launch, and some individual systems may change as Kraken Express continues testing them.

Faction ship variants are giving way to class-based customization

At present, Windrose offers specific ship variants associated with factions such as the Brethren of the Coast and Blackbeard’s Crew. They help establish a visual identity, but they also restrict how players combine sails, hull details and other exterior elements. Expanding that approach to more factions would make the system increasingly difficult to maintain.

Ashlands will replace these predefined variants with a more flexible model. Players will choose a ship class first, then customize it using the options available for that class. A Ketch, for example, will no longer need separate faction-branded versions to offer different looks.

Some existing faction-themed details will become available as part of a wider range of exterior options, alongside new customization elements. The result should make it easier for crews to give their ships a distinct identity without being locked into a particular faction preset.

What happens to ships players already own?

Removing existing faction-specific variants raises an obvious question for players with long-running saves: what happens to their current vessels? Kraken Express says players will not lose their progress and that resources from dismantled ships will be fully refunded.

The exact migration process has not yet been published. This is a promise about the planned transition, not a step-by-step procedure that server owners can apply today. The developer says it will explain how the changeover works once those details are finalized.

For persistent Windrose worlds: do not dismantle or rebuild your existing faction ships in anticipation of Ashlands. Wait for the official migration instructions, and make a recoverable backup of your world before applying the update when it eventually arrives.

Ship interiors become usable workshops and living spaces

One of the most practical changes concerns the ship’s hold. Rather than leaving it mostly as empty space, Kraken Express wants to make it a functional area where crews can prepare for journeys, organize supplies and spend more time at sea.

The studio has specifically discussed installing a workbench and a cooking fire below deck, as well as adding decorative elements. Further possibilities are under consideration, including extra storage containers, other crafting stations and utility modules. Those ideas are not all confirmed for the first release.

Additional storage, if implemented, may operate differently from the normal ship inventory. In particular, the developers note that such containers might not be remotely accessible through the Flagship tab. That detail matters for groups that rely on quick inventory management during long expeditions.

A ship that feels more like a mobile base

The goal is to make naval travel more useful between islands. Crews could prepare equipment and meals aboard ship instead of returning to their land base for every task, while decorative choices help turn the hold into a recognizable shared space.

Why fully free-form ship building is not planned

Ship interiors will not support the same unrestricted building system as land bases. Instead, installations will use a limited number of designated placement spots. Kraken Express explains that ships already combine many interconnected visual and gameplay systems, making them particularly demanding to optimize.

The limits are intended to protect performance while keeping interiors navigable for both players and crew. The developers also want ships to maintain the appearance and proportions of believable sailing vessels, rather than becoming unrestricted floating construction platforms.

This is an important distinction for multiplayer communities: the team is considering the technical cost of additional ship systems, but it has not announced any measured dedicated-server performance gains, new server requirements or a required hardware upgrade for Ashlands. Those details will need to be checked closer to release.

Ashlands also brings a new volcanic region and fresh adventures

The ship overhaul is only one part of Windrose’s first major content update. In an earlier Ashlands development roadmap, Kraken Express described a fourth biome shaped by historic volcanic eruptions, with new islands to explore, enemies to encounter, resources to gather, recipes to discover and a new boss to challenge.

The studio has also outlined plans for additional story content, side activities, weapons, armor and building options. More ship classes are being developed as well: the team previously showed work on the Brigantine, Fluyt and Galleon, while noting that at least one new class is expected to join Ashlands. The final ship lineup is still subject to change.

Kraken Express is also exploring deeper naval gameplay involving crew activity, cannons and ship systems. These concepts are not yet fully detailed, and players should not treat individual experiments, such as more advanced wind simulation, as confirmed launch features.

What does Ashlands mean for Windrose dedicated servers?

Windrose is built around shared exploration, sea battles and cooperative progression. A ship that supports more customization and crafting could become an even more important meeting point for a group playing in the same persistent world, especially when crews travel together through the new biome.

For now, no Ashlands-specific server migration instructions or confirmed server-side configuration changes have been released. Existing Windrose worlds can continue on the live version. Administrators do not need to take action for a winter update that has not launched.

As the release approaches, sensible preparations include keeping a tested backup, recording important server settings, watching for compatibility and save-migration guidance, and planning an update window once the studio publishes its final patch notes. The promise to refund dismantled ships’ resources should not be mistaken for a reason to skip backups.

VeryGames already offers dedicated Windrose server hosting for communities that want to explore together in their own shared environment. The Ashlands overhaul makes long-term world continuity particularly relevant, but any release-day procedures should be based on official instructions when those become available.

What comes next for Windrose?

The winter release window is now public, and ship customization is the first major system Kraken Express has examined in detail. Further previews are planned as the studio works toward Ashlands.

For players, the most significant change may be the shift from selecting a predefined ship variant to building a vessel around their own preferences. For community server owners, the key things to watch are the final launch date, the handling of existing ships and any update requirements for persistent worlds. Until then, Ashlands remains an upcoming update rather than a feature set available in the current game.
